The water cycle has never felt so deep and poetic

NAIAD is a beautiful narrative/exploration game by solo developer HiWarp. It’s set during a journey along a river on its way to the ocean.

A little naiad (a female spirit related to bodies of fresh water) is born in the clear wellspring of a river. There, a white cloud tells her that she must venture downriver to explore the world and grow.

As she traverses the river waters she encounters a lot of different animals, people and spirits that can benefit from her help.

The game is much more that but I don’t want to spoil anything. It’s better if you play the game blind story-wise.

We take control of Naiad as she swims in her journey down a river full of secrets. We can interact with both animals and plants to open new pathways.

Naiad also has the ability to sing with a wide array of musical notes, being capable of making plants grow, flowers bloom and many more things we can learn as we advance downriver.

There are a variety of helpful actions we can carry out if we wish to make the river a better place. For example: there are little fishes on each chapter we can help reach the next part of the river, or help a mother duck find her ducklings ♡.

The game is a whimsical ecological commentary on nature, its relationship with humankind, their cities and destructive traits, and of life itself.

NAIAD is an emotive and beautiful journey full of meaning. It’s very easy on the eyes and a very enjoyable experience.

I’ll be honest, at the start I found the game a bit boring but I kept playing and there was a moment when I understood I was playing in wrong and then it clicked. I ended up playing multiple times start to finish to get both endings and all the achievements. I totally recommend it!
